CONTENTdm JPEG2000 Extension
The CONTENTdm JPEG2000 Extension supports both the creation and display of JPEG2000 images. In the CONTENTdm workflow the JPEG2000 Extension enables collection builders to convert full resolution TIFF and JPEG files to JPEG2000 files during the import process. Existing JPEG2000 images can also be imported into CONTENTdm. This integration of JPEG2000 technology allows conversion, storage, and delivery of JPEG2000 media items to be handled entirely within CONTENTdm.
The CONTENTdm JPEG2000 Server supports dynamic decompression and display of JPEG2000 images for efficient viewing of large files without the need for browser plug-ins.
Images are presented to users in a standard Web browser with zoom and pan toolbar features. Users benefit from higher quality, detailed images without the delays normally experienced waiting for large images to be transmitted. JPEG2000 is ideal for image archives, maps, drawings, medical images, and other large image formats requiring high compression efficiency and image quality. With JPEG2000 users can view image details that would be difficult or impossible to see at lower resolutions. JPEG2000 items can be saved to My Favorites and used by researchers or instructors in slideshows to view and compare details among primary source materials.

What is JPEG2000?
JPEG2000 is the latest in a series of standards from the JPEG committee. JPEG2000 provides exceptionally high quality images at low bit rates, overcoming many of the limitations of the original JPEG standard. The original JPEG standard was developed 15 years ago, but advances in technology and research have resulted in a new standard capable of doing much more than simply making digital image files as small as possible.

The JPEG2000 Extension can be added to any new or existing CONTENTdm Server and is included with the purchase of some CONTENTdm license levels.
